What does it mean to be a Baptist?
Baptists believe that there are two symbolic acts of obedience (ordinances) in the life of the Christian; “The Lord’s Supper” and “Immersion Baptism”. “The Lord’s Supper” is the symbolic act where the Christian partakes of the bread and fruit of the vine, memorializing the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ. “Immersion Baptism” is the act that symbolizes the death, burial and resurrection in the life of a newly born again Christian. Baptist believe that these symbolic ordinances have no saving grace for the individual but represent the saving power of God in the life of the individual. Baptists historically hold a high view of Scripture. This means that the Bible is the Word of God and the final authority in establishing doctrine and practice in the church and the life of the Christian.
What does it mean to be a Southern Baptist?
Southern Baptists churches are unique, independent and autonomous yet we choose to organize into local, state and national fellowships to cooperate in training, ministries and in funding missions. This voluntary cooperation in no way jeopardizes or minimizes the local church’s autonomy.
How do I join First Baptist Church?
If you have been “born again” or “saved” then subsequently baptized by immersion, then you are eligible for membership. The Pastoral staff enjoys visiting with you and welcomes a visit in your home or here at the office to answer any questions you may have before you make that commitment.
· If you come from another Baptist church you can join by what is called a “transfer of letter”. Which means that we will send a notification of your desire to join our church and your former Baptist church will in turn, issue a statement of affirmation in reference to your good standing in that church.
· If you come from another denomination, have been “born again” or saved” and experienced immersion baptism in a symbolic manner, you may join by “statement of faith”.
· If you have been “born again” or “saved” but never been baptized we would love to have the opportunity to speak with you about following the Lord in believer’s baptism.
What do I have to do to be “born again” or “saved”?
Jesus said “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.” The Bible teaches that a person must admit that they are a sinner (Romans 3:23), that they believe and accept the finished work of Christ on the cross (Romans 1:16,17, 5:8-11), believe that God raised Jesus from the dead (Romans 10:9,10) and submit to Him as Lord of their life; loving, obeying and following Him (Matthew 22:36-40, Romans 10:9) Believing is more than an intellectual affirmation of the historical facts concerning Jesus, it is the type of belief that you stake your whole eternity on.
